Some of these model train scales are recognized globally, some less widespread, and some are only in the small circle of hobbyists that decide to create their own model trains.

A few of the more recognized model railroading scales include the following:

  • Z - this model train scale has a ratio of 1:220 and a gauge of 6.5 mm
  • N - this model railroad scale has a ratio of 1:160 and a gauge of 9 mm
  • TT - this model train scale has a ratio of 1:120 and a gauge of 12 mm
  • H0 - this train scale has a ratio of 1:87 and a gauge of 16.5 mm
  • S - this train scale has a ratio of 1:64 and a gauge of 22.5 mm
  • 0 - this model railroad scale has a ratio of 1:45 and a gauge of 32 mm
  • 1 - this model railroad scale has a ratio of 1:32 and a gauge of 45 mm
  • II - this model train scale has a ratio of 1:22.5 and a gauge of 64 mm

The ratio measured for each of these model train scales refers to the distance between the tracks. There are some tracks that have dual gauges and are able to hold two different model train scales at the same time.

There is more space to add intricate details; however, smaller scales are getting more and more detail and are great for not only collecting model trains, but creating the ambiance for them as well.
