About the Denver & Rio Grande Western 'UP Repaint #12272' paint scheme:
The Denver & Rio Grande Western had a huge fleet of 2,795 Bethlehem 3483 Hoppers. The first batch arrived in 1964 and the final in 1982. From 1964 to 1975 the cars were all numbered within the 16000 series road numbers. In 1975 and after all available 16000 series numbers were used, the D&RGW began using the 19000 series road numbers. They then exhausted this series and began using the 12000 series in 1979.
These 18 cars all represent numbers that were included in the 19645-19944 series of cars delivered in 12/78 from Bethlehem Steel. The D&RGW moved large amounts of coal from the mines in Utah & Colorado to various facilities throughout the west. While becoming harder and harder to locate, you can still find a few 19000 series cars throughout the Union Pacific system. While the 1974 and the 1978 delivered cars in this release are mostly the same paint scheme, there are a few differences. The 74 delivered cars have an ACI stencil, large single lube stencil and lacks the lessor stencil. The 78 delivered cars have a double panel lube stencil, they have a lessor stencil and no ACI label. There are a few other small differences.
