ExactRail HO Scale: P-S 5277 Waffle Boxcar - Family Lines System - SCL '1980 - As Delivered'
In 1974, the Southern Railway took delivery of 70 ton, 5277 cubic foot capacity box cars from Pullman-Standard. Different from the majority of other cars of the IPD era, the Southern cars had a full set of "waffles"--stamped impressions into the car's side panels which were intended to accommodate lading equipment. Beginning with P-S lot 9725, Southern Railway would eventually roster nearly 5,000 of these box cars. Found anywhere, the Southern P-S 50' 'Waffle' Box Car is the epitome of a signature classic!
About the Family Lines System - SCL Paint Scheme:
In 1980, Pullman-Standard delivered over 500 70-ton 5277 waffle boxcars to the Family Lines System. 50 were lettered for the Clinchfield (CRR 7300-7449), 75 for the Georgia Railroad (GA 55400-55474) and 400 for the Seaboard Coast Line (SCL 29050-29449). Most of these cars would eventually be repainted and renumbered by CSX. These cars slightly differ from our model due to an extra rib located to the bottom left and right of the door as well as having a Youngstown door.
